When people think of age most hate the thought of becoming old, because they want to stay young and beautiful all their lives. But I think that there are certain times when we all wish we were a certain age whether is young or old it just depends in what were going through in our lives. In the memoir Eleven, Sandra Cisneros tells the story of Rachel’s who wished she was one hundred and two on her eleventh birthday , because then she would have known what to say and do when Mrs. Price placed the “ugly sweater with red plastic buttons and a collar and sleeves all stretched out” on her desk. Even though Rachel tries to explain that the sweater is not hers Mrs. Price does not believe her insisting the sweater is hers, because she remembers her wearing it once and tells her to put it on. Here she wishes she was three because all she wants to do is cry, but remembers “that today I am eleven” and she has to act like it. Then when lunch comes around Sylvia Saldivar says “she remembers the red sweater is hers!” but Mrs. Price does not apologize for making a mistake and just pretends like everything was ok, because since “she’s older and she’s the teacher” she feels she doesn’t have to. When Rachel comes home from school her parents have cake and presents for her and even sang her happy birthday only “it’s too late” because she wants ‘today to go far far away” and be one hundred and two instead of eleven.

Everyone reacts different when they face a confict it all dependson how big you will is to overcome that conflict and bring something good out of it insteadof making it bigger . Kira was born with a disability she had a twisted leg and had to use a crane at all times, because without it she could not stand nor walk.She learned to do things for herself instead of having her mom do them for her and even managed to make some money to help her sick mother. She grew vegetables in the garden for her and her mom to eat and often she would walk down to the river and catch some fish. She did this because they could not afford to buy meat and the market was too far for her to go buy the vegetables. Even though she was a very talented weaver she could not work in the weaving shed as a weaver because the rest of the weavers thought she would not be able to keep up with the work and that she would slow them down.But this did not stop her she still managed to work there by picking up cloth scraps off the floor that the weavers no longer needed, and often she would take some scraps home and weave beautiful bright patterns into them which she sold in order to make some extra some extra money. When her mom died she got hired to restore the singer’s robe which tells the story of the past and the future this is a very important job, because only talented weavers are asked to do this. This shows her will to make her life better eventhough she had a disability which was a problem for her to do many things she did not let this stop. Kira had a positive oultook on life and knew she could do anything she set her mind to.But if she had been a negative person she would have given up of life and complain about her problem each and everyday and she would have just let her mom do everything for her.

Charlie Brown a thanksgiving LC01

The theme of the cartoon Charlie Brown a thanksgiving is to always be thankful for what is given to you even if it is not what you expected. Charlie, Snoopy, Lianas and Woodstock had to cook a thanksgiving dinner for Peppermint Patty, Marcy and Franklin after Peppermint Patty invented them and herself for a thanksgiving dinner at Charlie’s house. Since they didn’t know how to cook a proper thanksgiving meal they made popcorn and butter toast and bought pretzel sticks to feed their guests. When dinner was served Peppermint Patty started being rude and complaining about the meal, because she was expecting turkey with mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce and not what she was given. She should have been thankful to them, because they took the time to prepare their meal even if it was something very simple instead of complaining about what she wanted and did not get. She should appreciate the meal and give thanks for having that, because some people have nothing to eat at all. And for having such good friends that care and took the time to cook her, Marcy and Franklin when they could have not done anything at all since she invited herself and her two friends.

Mother to son and from Black Boy-LA06

The poem Mother to son, by Langston Hughes and the excerpt from Black boy, by Richard Wright are very similar because they both talk about the struggles two people had while growing up. In the poem the mom tells her son about how life as never been easy for her and how she had to live in a house that had no carpet often no electricity and she would go around bear footed. The excerpt narrates the struggle of a boy who used to get beaten up by a group of boys and they used to steal his money every time he tried to go to the grocery store, until one day he gets tired of it and fights back. The difference between these two stories is that in the poem the mom describes the struggles she went through to her son but didn’t do anything to change or stop them. And in the poem the boy is the one that tells the story of his struggles and how he chose to end them.

After reading the book Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry I can assume that Kira the main character is a very strong person and never gives up. Even though she has a twisted leg which keeps her from walking straight and at a normal pace she manages to get around and do things for herself, instead of having people do everything for her. She even helps her mom with the house chores and grows vegetables in their garden for them to eat since the market is too far for them to walk and buy them. She works in the weaving shed picking up cloth scraps the weavers in the looms drop and even though is a very talented weaver she cannot get a job at the there as a weaver ,because they think that she won’t be able to keep up with the work due to her leg problem . But she does not let this stop her from making some money to help her mom, she saves some of the cloth scrap that she picks up, weaves them and sells them. This shows her strong character and will to live a happy and normal life. She does not let her disability stop her and instead of complaining about it she has learned to live with it and is thankful to be alive.

Sandra Cisneros in a memoir titled Eleven claims that when you are eleven you are also all the ages before that.Cisneros supports her claim with when you wake up on your eleventh birthday you don’t feel eleven, that the way you grow old is like the rungs inside a tree trunk one inside the other, and that sometime you act like the years underneath you depending on the way you feel. The author’s apparent purpose is to express her opinion to people on growing up and on the way people act. Sandra reaches her audience by giving her opinion, giving examples and by sharing a memory.

Eric Huntley in an article titled Should students be allowed to use cell phones in school? (2007) argues that cell phones should not be allowed in school because they cause distractions in a learning environment. Huntley supports his argument by giving statistics, suggesting some alternatives of how teens can get in contact with their parents in case of an emergency without causing a distraction in class and by giving examples of how cell phones do more harm than good. The author’s apparent purpose is to inform students and parents in order to promote a more focused and productive learning environment. The author reaches his audience by giving examples, appealing to the desire of academic success and by sharing his personal opinion on the topic.

In the memoir Eleven by Sandra Cisneros Rachel’s eleventh birthday turns out to be her worst birthday, because Mrs. Price forces her to wear “an ugly sweater with red plastic buttons and a collar and sleeves all stretched out” insisting that its hers but it isn’t. This situation causes Rachel to feel frustrated because when she tries to explain that the sweater is not hers Mrs. Price does not believe her and instead tells her ‘of course it’s yours… I remember you wearing it.”Rachel feels that she was treated unfairly just because she is a kid and because Mrs. Price thinks she’s right “because she is older and she’s the teacher”. And even though Rachel tries to be happy by remembering that she will have presents and eat the cake her mom made her when her dad comes from work and they will sing her happy birthday, she does not feel happy at all. She feels this will all be too late, because instead of having a happy birthday she’s having a sad one.

The author’s purpose in the memoir Eleven by Sandra Cisneros is to entertain a general audience by narrating a memory of Rachel an eleven year old girl who has the worst birthday ever. When her teacher Mrs. Price makes her wear “an ugly sweater that smells like cottage cheese” insisting that it belongs to her. And when Rachel tries to explain that the sweater is not hers Mrs. Price does not believe her and tells her to stop her nonsense and to put the sweater on. She only believes Rachel when Phyllis Lopez says that “she remembers the red sweater is actually hers!” But Mrs. Price does not to Rachel apologize for making that mistake and not believing her or for forgetting her birthday. This makes her eleventh birthday miserable.

In article Got homework? Want more? in the Teen news week magazine the author argues that teens in America have less homework compared to teens in other countries and also claims that too much homework interferes with family time. The author supports his theory by saying that teens spend more time watching TV than on doing homework, that they need to do homework in order to practice and review what they learned in school that day, and that homework over burdens students, disrupts family life and limits homework.The intended purpose of this article is to express the two arguments of students not having enough homework and how homework interferes in life outside of school. And to inform people what the benefits of having homework are as well as the disadvantages of having too much.The authors of this article reaches its audience by giving statistics, using a quote from a book and by giving a mom’s and a teacher’s opinion on the topic.
